Start your rotating buff and press the compound lightly against the face of the wheel for just a few seconds. Little and often beats loading it up in one go.

Polishing: bring your comb into contact with the buff using light pressure, moving it back and forth.
Cleanup: wipe off any leftover compound with mineral turpentine, methylated spirits, or warm soapy water.
